Dental treatment solutions take a variety of forms. The best treatment for you may be distinctly different than the best option for someone else. However, certain preliminary steps are shared in common by more than one dental solution. Tooth extractions are a prime example of this kind of preparatory procedure. In an extraction, one or more of your teeth are safely removed by a dental professional.

When Are Teeth Extractions Recommended?
Whenever possible, dentists strive to preserve your natural teeth. However, in some cases, this simply isn’t possible. Instead, we may need to extract or remove at least one of your teeth. This is a fairly common recommendation if:
- You have teeth that are severely decayed.
- You’ve experienced a tooth fracture.
- You have severe gum disease.
- One of your teeth is impacted, i.e., stuck in your gum or jawbone.
- The teeth in your gum line are overcrowded.
We may also recommend a tooth extraction treatment for a luxated tooth. This term describes a situation in which the tissues supporting your tooth are physically damaged.
Preparing for a Tooth Extraction Treatment
Before performing a tooth extraction, we must take certain preparatory actions. That includes such things as:
- Examining your affected teeth and the surrounding area of your gums
- Backing up this exam with detailed dental X-rays
- Discussing any medications you’re currently taking
We’ll also determine if you need some form of sedation for your procedure. This may be the case if you tend to experience significant anxiety at the dentist’s office. You may also simply prefer sedation to increase your comfort level.
Steps of Tooth Extraction
What happens during the actual extraction? There are several core steps to the procedure:
- Numbing the extraction area with a local anesthetic
- Loosening the affected tooth in its socket as gently as possible
- Lifting the tooth out of its socket and removing it from your mouth
- Cleaning and disinfecting the socket
- Packing the site with gauze to slow normal post-extraction bleeding
We may also need to take some additional steps. For instance, in some situations, we may need to make incisions in your gum tissue to remove badly damaged teeth. In addition, some patients require bone grafts or stitches at the extraction site.
Dental Procedures Following Teeth Extractions
With certain precautions, you can resume normal eating and drinking two to three days after your extraction. However, the bone under the extraction site requires a few weeks to heal completely. This means that you’ll have to wait a bit before we can perform any follow-up dental procedures.
Extraction may precede any of three procedures: denture fitting and the placement of a dental bridge or implant. We perform all three of these procedures here at NewStart. If you require any of them, we’re happy to make the necessary arrangements.
